Permanent Mission of the Republic of Slovenia to the Office of the United Nations and to the Other International Organizations in Geneva! /World Health Organization (WHO) /

World Health Organization

The Mission is also focused on cooperation with the World Health Organization as well as on maintaining and promoting contacts between Slovenia and WHO.

It seems that right now the organization is in a very dynamic period. Since January 2007 it has new, competent and ambitious Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan (more information available at http://www.who.int/dg/en/index.html). Under the leadership of her and her associates, the World Health Assembly has (WHO highest decision-making body) adopted ambitious two year budget for the period 2008-2009, and Medium-Term Strategic Plan. We believe that WHO has set clear objectives and vision of its future work. Slovenia fully supports all efforts of WHO and its leadership in coping with contemporary health challenges of mankind: Pandemic influenza, HIV, malaria etc. Within WHO there is intensive discussion going on dedicated to relation between public health issues on one, and innovation and intellectual property of the medicines and medical equipment on the other side. Slovenia is convinced that this issue is extremely important for the future work of WHO.

Slovenia is also aware of its national priorities in this field, related primarily to its aging population and secondly non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and alcohol related problems. That is why Slovenia participated in the WHO Executive Board in the period 2006-2009. Slovenia actively participates in the debates of the Board, thus contributing with its constructive approach to the effective work of the Board.
